The School of the Environment in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time teaching stream position in the area of Sustainability Education. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, with an expected start date of July 1, 2024 or shortly thereafter. The successful candidate will be appointed as the Director of the Trinity Sustainability Initiative in Trinity College at the University of Toronto for a five-year term.
Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Physical and Environmental Sciences with a specialist in Environment and Health by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching. We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths. Candidates must have teaching experience in a degree granting program at both undergraduate and graduate level, including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and development of online material/lectures. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities.

For this position, candidates must have experience developing and teaching courses on Environment & Mental Wellness; Sustainability of Ethics, Society, & Law; and Environmental Science and Pathways Towards Sustainability. Additionally, candidates must have experience teaching first year undergraduate courses and supervising and mentoring students’ projects in Research Opportunity and Work Study programs, and must have published research on sustainability pedagogy, nature-based education, and Indigenous Food Systems.

Evidence of excellence in teaching and a commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below) as well as strong letters of reference from referees of high standing.

Candidates are also expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment demonstrated through the application materials.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The School of the Environment is an interdisciplinary hub within the Faculty of Arts & Science, running undergraduate and graduate programs in environment and sustainability. The School recently launched a new undergraduate certificate in sustainability, open to students in any program in Arts and Science, and partners with Trinity College’s Lawson Centre for Sustainability to create new experiential learning opportunities around the sustainable campus. The successful candidate will play a leadership role in Trinity’s Integrated Sustainability Initiative, as well as teaching sustainability courses at both Trinity College and the School. The appointment will be held at the University of Toronto campus in downtown Toronto (St. George campus).
